How do our groups work?

Navigating social situations can be daunting for many young people, especially those who are neurodivergent, or for those who experience social anxiety or mental ill-health. However, as occupational therapists who strive to be neurodiversity-affirming, we’ve seen first-hand the transformative power of group therapy for young people.

Understanding ‘The Social Confidence Collective’ way of therapy

Our groups aren’t about teaching young people “how to” be social. Instead, it's about empowering adolescents and young adults to embrace their unique selves and build the confidence to approach social situations as authentically as they feel able to.

Embracing Neurodiversity

At the core of our approach is a deep respect for difference. We understand that each individual has their own strengths and areas where they could use support. Our groups are designed to celebrate these differences and build a supportive environment where everyone feels more able to be themselves. We DON’T teach young people one way to socialise, because we don’t believe there is one way of doing it.

Building Authentic Connections

One of the key goals of our group therapy is to help young people understand how to they develop meaningful connections with others. This involves exploring their own interests, understanding their communication styles, and learning what works for them to regulate emotions they might experience in social situations. This knowledge is then used to empower young people to be able to make a choice in how they then approach future social interaction.

Tailored Support

Many of our participants are seeking a space where they can feel accepted and supported. Our therapy groups provide a safe space where young people (whether neurodivergent, have social anxiety or have had negative social experiences in the past) can explore their social strengths, address challenges without judgement, and practice how they would like to be in social interactions…while hopefully having some fun.

Beyond Social Skills: Self-Understanding and Empowerment

Unlike traditional social skills training, which focuses on imitating expected social behaviours, and teaching the ‘right way’ to interact with others, our groups delve deeper into self-understanding. We encourage young people to identify their goals, recognize their strengths, and develop strategies that align with their personal values. We don’t teach social skills, we support the development of social confidence!

How Our Groups Work

Our sessions typically involve a mix of facilitated group discussions, fun activities and individual reflections. We create a structured yet flexible environment where participants can practice their skills in a supportive setting. We provide predictability while offering choice from week to week.

Supporting Families and Support Networks

We recognize the importance of a holistic approach to therapy. That's why we also communicate regularly with the young person’s support systems, including their families, NDIS support coordinators, school staff and other professionals involved who play crucial roles in the lives of our participants. This hopefully helps to better understand the young person, but also helps to generalise any gains experienced in the group to rest of their lives.

Celebrating Progress and Growth

Every step toward social confidence is a milestone worth celebrating. We celebrate not only the tangible progress our participants make but also the personal growth they develop along the way. Each success story reinforces our belief in the transformative impact of neurodiversity-affirming groups for young people.
